MSP project management

MSP project management is the practice of planning and delivering IT projects — onboardings, migrations, rollouts — inside a managed-services business, where the plan has to connect to PSA billing and real technician capacity.

Generic project management assumes a dedicated project team and a standalone budget. MSP project management is different: the same technicians who deliver projects also carry a service-ticket queue, the work bills through contracts, and 'the project' is often a repeatable playbook — a standard onboarding — run for the hundredth time.

What makes it its own discipline

  • Time and billing live in the PSA (Autotask, ConnectWise), so project time has to flow there cleanly.
  • Technician capacity is shared with reactive support — schedules must account for tickets and PTO, not just project tasks.
  • Most projects are templated: onboarding, server or email migration, security rollout, office move.
  • Clients — and their internal IT — increasingly expect visibility into progress.

The capabilities that matter

Dependency-aware scheduling and critical path (so a slip is visible), capacity and PTO awareness (so the plan is real), templates and playbooks (so you don't rebuild the same onboarding), a client portal (for co-managed visibility), and two-way PSA sync (so time reaches billing). The native project modules in Autotask and ConnectWise cover the basics; the planning depth is where a modern tool earns its place.
