An engineer's day in Current

6 min read · Updated Sep 11, 2026

An engineer in Current works from My Day, moves their own tasks, and logs time that becomes a billing record in your PSA. The role can create and edit its own assigned tasks, log its own time, manage what its own tasks wait on, comment, and record its own time off; it does not manage other people's time or anything under Workspace. This playbook is the first hour, the day, the week, the rules you will run into, and what a month in looks like.

Note
One word for the businesses you serve
This help center says partners for your clients (Current itself uses the word your workspace picked under Settings → Workspace basics).

The first hour

  1. 1
    My Day
The glance bar (overdue, due today, due this week, open tasks, tickets, planned hours), the on-deck card naming your single most urgent item and why it is next, a Calendar strip of your week you can drag chips across, and the queue itself in Overdue, Today, This week, Next week, Later and No date. Switch between All, Tasks and Tickets, and pick a project chip in the Radar band to see only that project's rows.
  2. 2
    Your Getting started card
Bottom right. It lists your own steps: link your PSA identity, open a project, connect your Microsoft 365 calendar, log your first time entry, take the tour. The PSA identity is linked by a workspace admin on Users & roles; ask for it on day one, because until it is linked no time you log can reach billing.
  3. 3
    A project
Board and List show every task; the drawer opens on click with status, assignee, dates, estimate, comments, and the Waits on and Waiting on this lists. You can add or remove what your own task waits on without a project manager.
  4. 4
    Time entry
The weekly grid, a running timer that survives a reload, and quick-add from any task card. The dialog pre-fills what your PSA requires for that task (billing code, work type, contract and role, or work role, work type and agreement) and lets you change any of them.
  5. 5
    Calendar
Your work by date, in month, week or day view. Drag a task to a new day and Current snaps it off weekends and holidays and, on a synced task, pushes the new dates to your PSA.

Walkthroughs for engineers

Log a time entry is offered above the form on your very first entry and waits for the real entry to exist; you can save without it. Set your PTO takes you to Schedule and ends on a real day off on your own row. Add a dependency and see the critical path may be offered to you as well, because you can manage what your own task waits on. Replay any of them from Learn Current, in the menu behind your initials.

The day

  1. 1
    Start on My Day
Take the on-deck item. It is the most urgent thing across every project you touch, and the card says why it is next.
  2. 2
    Move the card
Drag it across the Board or change its status in the drawer as the work moves. A task marked done leaves the Schedule board's dispatch tray; done work is not dispatchable.
  3. 3
Log the time when you stop
Start the timer when you start and Stop & log when you finish; Current clears the timer only after the entry has saved. Or add time from the card. Same-day entry is what makes the hours-per-endpoint and margin gauges trustworthy, and that tile prints how much of its time was entered the day the work happened.
  4. 4
    Read the wrap-up
In the afternoon My Day compares hours logged to your target and lists unsubmitted drafts. Submit them; a draft never reaches billing.
  5. 5
    Ticket time
Add Time on a synced support ticket works like a task. A ticket type your PSA does not accept time on is blocked before you type a summary, and it unblocks itself once your PSA allows it again.

The week

  • The timesheet grid on Time entry, one week at a glance: every day filled, nothing left in draft.
  • The Outbox, for anything that failed to reach your PSA. A row that says the task no longer exists in your PSA will fail the same way on every retry; your manager can move the time to a task that exists or write it off, and a written-off entry stays on your timesheet labelled with who, when and why.
  • Schedule: enter PTO and blocked days ahead of time. A marked day drops your capacity to zero, and anything scheduled against you that day is pushed.
  • Radar on My Day: the risks on your projects, each with the record it came from.
  • Your to-do list, in the rail on My Day.

The rules you will run into, and why

  • Time on a synced project flows to your PSA's billing, and an entry that cannot get there cannot be created. Current refuses time on a Current-native project (there is no billing to reach), on a task or ticket that has not synced yet, on a ticket type your PSA will not take, and from an account with no PSA identity, and tells you which one it is. The fix is the data, not a way around the guard: this is what keeps duplicate or malformed entries out of your PSA's invoices.
  • An entry has a life: draft, submitted, synced, then approved or rejected, read back from your PSA rather than guessed. Rejected and voided entries stay on your Time page and stop counting. Two identical blocks on the same ticket and day both bill, on purpose; a retry after a failed push never bills twice.
  • Time rounding is a workspace setting, so the minutes you type may be rounded the way your PSA expects.
  • A project marked Current-native is internal work that never touches your PSA. If you need billable time on it, ask the project manager to build it into the PSA; that conversion is permanent.
  • My Work and Everything are a scope filter, not a permission. Everything shows what your role can already see.
  • A partner who has been given the project sees its tasks' names, states and progress and the co-managed comments, never an hour or a rate. Write a co-managed comment as if the partner will read it, because they will.
  • You can manage what your own task waits on. A link that would create a cycle is refused, and so is a link between a PSA-synced task and a Current-native one.
  • Your workspace admin can see which onboarding steps and walkthroughs you have finished and when. Not how long you spent, and never as a ranking.

What good looks like after a month

  • Time entered the day it happened, every day, and no draft older than the week it belongs to.
  • PSA identity linked, calendar connected, tour taken, and the time-entry walkthrough behind you.
  • Nothing assigned to you sits in No date; a task with no date cannot be scheduled and cannot be on a critical path.
  • Your PTO for the quarter is on Schedule.
  • The Outbox is empty, or every row in it has a reason and an owner.
