Quote-line pay preview: compare commission by quote line with today's pay
The Quote-line pay preview shows what each won opportunity pays under today's commission rules beside what it would pay under commission by quote line, where pay is worked out from the lines on the won quote. It is a preview only: it changes nobody's pay, nothing on the page is saved, and statements are still built with today's rules. Open it from Sales › Commissions › Plans & incentives, on the Plans tab, with Quote-line pay preview beside Create plan.
Run a preview
- 1Pick the windowSet From and To. Every opportunity won in that window is included, up to a year at a time.
- 2Choose what reps with no plan compare withA rep with no commission plan pays nothing today. Pick one of your plans to compare them with that plan instead, or leave No plan.
- 3Set the new ratesStart from one of your plans to copy its rates, then change any of them: Recurring (a multiple of the monthly amount), Renewal (a multiple of the renewed monthly amount; required, 0 pays nothing), Renewal minimum (the share of the old monthly amount a renewal must keep; blank for none), Minimum margin, and a percent each for Services, Hardware, Software and Other lines.
- 4Press Run previewEvery won opportunity in the window goes through both sets of rules. The rates you typed are used for this run only and saved nowhere.
Reading the results
- +Four totals across the top: Today's rules, New rules, Difference, and Waiting for a manager (the items and opportunities the new rules can't pay yet).
- +By rep: each rep's opportunities, pay under both rules, the difference and what is waiting.
- +By opportunity, largest change first, with a status for each: Ready, Waiting (with the reason), Quote not read yet, or Keeps today's rules. Open one to see each line under the new rules and why a line is not paid.
- +Opportunities closed by a sync pay nothing under either rule. They are counted below the table rather than listed.
- +Accelerators are left out of both columns, so the two sides compare like with like.
Why an opportunity is waiting
The new rules never guess. When a line can't be paid with confidence it waits for a manager, and the preview says why, for example: a manager needs to pick which quote the opportunity pays from, the quote's lines haven't been read yet, the lines don't add up to the quote's own totals, the quote has no cost so the margin can't be checked, the margin is below the minimum you set, or a renewal may already have been paid on another opportunity for the same agreement.
How commission is earned today, and how statements are approved, is covered in "How commission gets recognized: the earning ladder" and "Approve, split, and adjust commission statements".
